Magic: The Gathering Rarities

MicroProse Astral Set

Index | Astral | Tokens | Fantasy

When it was clear that Magic The Gathering was going to be a success, Wizards of the Coast contracted with MicroProse to produce a computer version of the card game. The project was run out of MicroProse's Hunt Valley, Maryland studio and produced by David Etheredge (aka "Coyote Tex"). After many delays and missed deadlines, and a total conversion of the product from DOS-based to Windows 95, Magic for the PC was finally released in April, 1997. Spells of the Ancients, an expansion pack that added many more cards from Unlimited, Arabian Nights, and Antiquities was released later that year in September. Duels of the Planeswalkers, a repackaging of the original game with internet play and 80-odd more cards from Legends and The Dark added, was released in the summer of 1998.

The Astral set are 12 cards that are only available in the MicroProse computer game. These cards incorporate various random attributes that would be difficult or impossible to replicate in real life. The only card to be printed in a dead-tree version is the 6x9 Aswan Jaguar, which was included in the first 50,000 packages of the original game.

MicroProse Fantasy Cards
Many more cards were included in the game than are available to play. These include most of the remaining Legends cards, and in particular the multicolor "Summon Legend" cards. However, there is no computer code to implement these cards, so only the pictures are visible. Additionally, there are a number of other "cards" that are unique to the MicroProse game. These include unrealized concepts such as the Guilds and Societies, some new spells (Sligh players, take note of Veteran), and pure fantasy cards like "MPS Logo". Only a few of these cards have artwork, and none are playable.
