Portal is a simplified version of Magic released in 1997. WotC has been trying for a long time to find a way to get new players into the game; Portal is one of many such attempts. The card set is very much simplified: only creatures, sorceries, and land. Also, creature types were removed and many instants recast as sorceries.

In addition, cards were included in Portal boosters describing how to construct and play certain deck archetypes. There were two variations of these cards available. There was also a Portal box set that included checklist cards which listed all available cards in Portal.
