Wizards of the Coast is busily preparing yet another foray into the world of online Magic the Gathering. This will be the third such attempt, following in the wake of such past failed products as the MicroProse MTG product and the Interactive Encyclopedia.

Magic the Gathering Online features a full rules-based interface with the latest available cards (from Seventh Edition and Invasion onward.) This answers two of the biggest critiques of the previous products: the MicroProse game never had the latest cards, and the Interactive Encyclopedia was not rules-based.

While there is still some hurdles, most notably the controversy concerning the price of virtual cards, MTG Online looks like the most serious effort yet to bring the card game into the digital world. Time will tell if it's a classic or another Magic side note.

While there are no custom cards for MTGO like there were for the MicroProse or Sega game, there are a few notable items that appear only in the computerized game. There are a number of new token cards that have not yet been printed in real life. Also, there is the test card "Library of Congress" that has extraordinary powers—it basically allows the player to do just about anything. This is useful when debugging the game and you need a certain event to happen, and don't want to wait around to draw just the right cards.
